WHAT is a Ratio?
A ratio is a comparison of two numbers.
Two numbers are generally seperated by a colon ":"
USE:
Suppose we want to write the ratio of 4 and 6.
We can write it as:
4:6
or as:
4/6
And we read it as " The ratio is 4 to 6".
Example:
Danny has a sack with 3 carrots, 4 cabbages, 7 tomatoes and 1 Raddish.
1) What is the ratio of tomatoes to carrots?
If expressed as a fraction then the quantity mentioned first will be the numerator and the quantity mentioned second will be the denominator.
Since the quantity of tomatoes was mentioned first our numerator is 7.
While the quantity of carrots was mentioned second so our denominator is 3.
Therefore the answer will be written like this:
Numerator<----- 7/3-----> Denominator
If expressed using the colon ":"
The answer will be written like this:
7:3
Another way to express the answer is simply writing it like this:
The ratio is 7 to 3.
2) What is the Ratio of cabbages to the total number of items in the sack?
To get the answer we must first know the quantity of the cabbages.
There are 4 cabbages.
Since we need the TOTAL number of items in the sack, we add all the vegetables in the sack including the cabbages.
4 cabbages
3 carrots
7 tomatoes
+ 1 Radish
______________
15 Total Vegetables
Lets go back to the question # 2:
2) What is the ratio of cabbages to the total number of items in the sack?
There are 4 cabbages and 15 total number of items in the sack
The answer may be written as any of the following:
3 to 15
3:15
3/15
